About the museum
The Museo del Tartufo di Scheggino, in Valnerina, opened to the public in March 2012 and is named after Paolo Urbani, Cavaliere del Lavoro (Knight of Labour). It was conceived by Olga Urbani in memory of her father and is designed as a museum to be “lived” rather than merely looked at: it tells the story of the truffle, the “black diamond” of Valnerina, and of the family that has dealt in it for six generations.
The route traces the activity of the founders, who from 1852 began exporting fresh truffles to France, up to the creation of the company Urbani Tartufi. Among the objects on display are handwritten invoices, telegrams and letters, including personal ones, arriving from the United States, the old tubs for washing truffles from the farmhouse of Carlo and Olga Urbani, and a letter of thanks from US President Ronald Reagan for a truffle weighing over one kilogram. The museum also commemorates the Confraternita del Tartufo, founded in the 1980s, and the title of Cavaliere del Lavoro conferred on Paolo Urbani in 1996.
The museum is the Scheggino outpost of the Ecomuseo della Dorsale Appenninica Umbra, devoted to the truffle, truffle cultivation and truffle gathering. At the entrance visitors can leave signatures and dedications on the walls; a small boutique offers fresh and preserved truffles and other products.
