About the museum
The ecomuseum is part of the Ecomuseo del Casentino network and grows out of the close bond between the people of Raggiolo and the landscape of the Pratomagno. For centuries the chestnut tree, cultivated by people as a garden, was the main food resource of the valley and set the rhythm of work, customs and traditions in the village; the local variety known as “raggiolana” is prized for its abundant fruit, which, once dried and ground into flour, keeps for a long time.
The heart of the ecomuseum is the interpretation centre in the historic centre, where work tools, models, panels and a multimedia section tell the “civilisation of the chestnut”. It also houses the Mappa della Comunità di Raggiolo (Raggiolo Community Map), produced with the direct contribution of the residents, and a more recent section devoted to transhumance, that is, the autumn journey of the flocks from the pastures of the Pratomagno to the Maremma. In the same building is the Sala dei Còrsi, the venue for the village's cultural activities, in memory of the Corsican colony that repopulated the castle at the end of the 15th century.
From the interpretation centre the route continues through the stone village, with panels and historical photographs along the cobbled lanes, the Muro delle parole dimenticate (Wall of Forgotten Words) and the Stanza del tempo (Room of Time), then out of the settlement to the Seccatoio dei Cavallari, still used for demonstrations of chestnut drying, and to the Mulino di Morino, restored as evidence of local material culture. The “Percorso della castagna” (Chestnut Trail) then climbs back up the stream towards the village. The ecomuseum is run in collaboration with the association La Brigata di Raggiolo.
