About the museum
The Raccolta rurale Casa Rossi is located at Soci, on the edge of Bibbiena, on a farm estate that has belonged to the Rossi family since 1868 and was previously owned by the Camaldolese monks. The collection took shape over the years, in the old granary of the manor house, and is part of the network of the Ecomuseo del Casentino.
It holds almost two thousand objects and documents relating mainly to sharecropping, largely from the Archiano Valley. One section is devoted to fuller’s teasel (cardo dei lanaioli), grown on an industrial scale and used at the Bocci woollen mill in Soci. Among the most curious pieces are a Napoleonic passport of 1811, a staff with a brass measuring rule for cattle, a whetstone and clogs made from reused old materials. There are also paintings, sculptures and photographs donated by artists, and the “camere delle meraviglie” (cabinets of wonders) with family collections.
The Stanza del Basilisco, a museum of kitsch founded by Francesco Maria Rossi from the 1980s onwards, forms a separate section. The Sentiero delle Bonifiche Agrarie also starts from the Casa Rossi locality; it follows the reclamation embankment of the Archiano Valley and, with explanatory panels, illustrates the colmate system of land reclamation by sediment deposit and the regulation of the valley floor.
