About the museum
The museum is part of the network of the Ecomuseo del Casentino, in particular of the system dedicated to castle civilisation (civiltà castellana), and has been open since June 2000. It is housed in the former Romanesque church of San Niccolò, now deconsecrated, within the medieval village of Castel San Niccolò.
The route, relying mainly on illustrated panels, tells the story of the incastellamento (fortification) of the Casentino and the history of the castles of the valley. Villages, hamlets and markets arose at the foot of these fortifications; the village that hosts the museum is one of them, with houses once enclosed by walls, of which the gate flanked by a tower survives, and with the castle of San Niccolò above it, one of the main examples of medieval civil architecture in the valley.
The museum ideally points to the other castles of the Casentino, such as Porciano, Romena and Poppi, and invites visitors to continue along the ancient medieval path that descends to the market square of Strada and the Romanesque pieve (parish church) of San Martino a Vado. A theme linked to medieval building is stone working, still practised in the village.
