About the museum
The Ecomuseo “Storie di carri e carradori” is set up in the former church of San Rocco in Zimone and is part of the Ecomuseo Valle Elvo e Serra and the Rete Museale Biellese (Biella museum network). It traces and documents the construction techniques of animal-drawn carts, vehicles that were once very widespread and which, with small differences in size and technique, were essentially similar to those already used by the Romans and by earlier and later peoples.
Carts were built almost everywhere by local craftsmen. Those made in Zimone were especially prized in the area, where they were used for work in the fields, for trade, and for transporting people, materials and equipment.
The museum also aims to make visible what the cartwrights meant to the territory and to highlight the many roles of carts in community life. Besides guided tours, Zimone organises training activities throughout the year, such as day excursions and workshops on exploring the landscape and on the farm cart (its history, materials, techniques and uses).
