About the museum
The Museo Longarone Vajont – Attimi di Storia commemorates the disaster of the night of 9 October 1963, regarded as the most serious catastrophe in Italy since the Second World War, and pays tribute to the 1,910 victims and to the survivors who found the strength to start again. It is located at Piazza Gonzaga in Longarone, in the locality of Pirago, and the museum is run by the Pro Loco di Longarone.
The route, which develops over four sections and two rooms, follows a chronological order and combines historical images, artefacts, testimonies and films. The sections tell of Longarone before 9 October 1963, the construction of the dam, the tragedy with the destruction of the valley and the first rescue operations at dawn on 10 October, and finally the reconstruction and the memory of the town. The section on the tragedy also includes accounts by survivors and the coverage of the event by Italian and foreign newspapers.
Along the route, some QR codes allow visitors to listen to an audio guide. The museum also offers a travelling exhibition and points out places linked to memory: the bell tower of Pirago, the cemetery of Fortogna, the church of Longarone and the Vajont dam.
