About the museum

The Fondazione Montanelli Bassi was founded in 1987 at the wish of the journalist Indro Montanelli and also bears the name of Emilio Bassi, mayor of Fucecchio in the early 20th century. Since 1993 it has been based in the Palazzo della Volta, in the historic centre of Fucecchio along the Via Francigena, restored with the support of the foundation and of the Nobile Contrada di Sant’Andrea. The building, enlarged by the Montanelli family by joining several houses and called palazzo Montanelli Della Volta at the end of the 18th century, retains medieval traces on its façade.

On the first floor are the Montanelli archive, his studies in Milan and Rome reconstructed with the original furnishings, and a collection of paintings and drawings by Arturo Checchi, a painter from Fucecchio close to the Impressionists. The foundation owns 23 paintings, 33 drawings, 2 watercolours, 14 notebooks and a volume of 48 etchings by the artist, partly donated by Montanelli in 1998. The presidency room displays objects connected with the journalist’s travels and career, including weapons from the Ethiopian campaign, a Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival, medals and honorary degrees.

The library holds books donated by Montanelli, first editions of his works and of the Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca, while the periodicals room preserves collections of newspapers such as Il Giornale and La Voce. The foundation is also devoted to the study of Montanelli’s work, to promoting the culture of Fucecchio and to journalism and literary prizes.
