About the museum

The museum took shape in the 1950s on the joint initiative of the Municipality of Fucecchio, the Superintendence of Fine Arts of Florence and the Diocese of San Miniato. It was inaugurated on 25 May 1969 in the former chapel of the Misericordia on the Poggio Salamartano as a collection of sacred art, with the first works owned by the State, the Diocese and the Municipality.

From the 1970s archaeological research in the area was added, and in 1978 the Municipality bought the natural history collection of Adolfo Lensi, with three hundred specimens of the fauna of the Padule di Fucecchio. Since 2004 the museum has been housed in the Palazzo Corsini, in the historic centre, on the edge of the park with the remains of the castle of Salamarzana and of the Florentine fortress (Rocca fiorentina).

The route is organised in three sections: archaeology (rooms 1–6), from the natural environment to prehistory, the Etruscan and Roman periods, the Cadolingi, the kilns and the history of the Arno; art (rooms 7–15), with paintings, goldsmith’s works, sacred vestments, the memorabilia of Giuseppe Montanelli and the collection of Arturo Checchi; and natural history (rooms 16–17), with the Lensi collection. The ticket also includes a visit to the Torre di Mezzo.
