About the museum
The Museo della Conceria in Santa Croce sull'Arno opened in 2013 after a restoration project. It occupies the site of the former municipal slaughterhouses and the historic Lapi tannery in Via di Pelle, in the heart of the tanning district of the lower Valdarno. Part of the tannery and most of the slaughterhouses were demolished to make room for two new buildings: a two-level, lens-shaped block and a loggia that forms the new covered entrance from Via di Pelle.
The old tannery is linked to the new building by glass corridors on both floors. The exhibition route reconstructs the pre-industrial tanning cycle with tools and machinery and tells the story of leather working in the area.
The building also hosts events and public initiatives and can be made available to associations and other bodies. The municipality currently reports that the museum is temporarily closed to the public.
