About the museum
The museum was set up in 1999 in the premises of the former church of Santa Chiara and is part of the Sistema museale del Valdarno di Sotto. It documents the Valdarno side of the territory with materials ranging from the first prehistoric visits to the Etruscan and Roman settlements along the watercourses of the alluvial plain, up to the medieval layout.
Particularly important are the data relating to the new town of Castrum Franchum, founded in 1255, collected during the urban excavation of 1995. On that occasion a large area of the ancient terracotta paving of the square in front of the town hall was brought to light, an important document for the construction and maintenance techniques of medieval roads. Above the road surface, the stratigraphy yielded information on the diet of the inhabitants and on the circulation of ceramics, including Pisan and Florentine majolica dating from the 14th to the 16th century.
The route also includes finds that emerged during the recent restoration of the church of Santa Chiara itself.
