About the museum
Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto was founded in 1998 by the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, a leading figure of Arte Povera. It is based in Biella, in the former Lanificio Trombetta, a nineteenth-century industrial heritage complex on the Cervo stream protected by the Ministero della Cultura (Ministry of Culture). The foundation is a recognised non-profit body supported by the Piedmont Region.
The project is a laboratory of creative research that joins art and social life: the work is organised in sectors called “Uffizi”, each devoted to the relationship between art and an area of society, such as ecology, economy, politics, education or fashion. Over the year the foundation presents exhibitions, educational programmes, film screenings, performances, concerts and festivals.
The visit route includes the Opificio, with three exhibition floors overlooking the central courtyard, and the permanent collection of Pistoletto's works, ranging from the Porte – Uffizi in the attic to the Venere degli stracci, passing through the Quadri specchianti, Divisione e Moltiplicazione and Segno Arte. In a second former factory near the courtyard is the Sede del Terzo Paradiso, the official seat of the symbol devised by the artist, with the testimonies of the Terzo Paradiso embassies around the world.
