About the museum
The Savoy family's ties to the Sanctuary of Oropa date back to the 17th century. The current Royal Apartment dates from the first half of the 18th century and was first used by Charles Emmanuel III and Victor Amadeus III; later royal guests included Umberto I (1880), Queen Margherita (between 1906 and 1923), the future Umberto II (1926) and Queen Maria José (1989).
The museum holds the sanctuary's treasure: archaeological finds from the 2nd century BC, the altarpiece by Bernardino Lanino of 1522, portraits of the first people who received miracles, ex voto offerings, archive documents and architectural drawings by Arduzzi, Gallo, Juvarra and Galletti. In the third room, liturgical vestments from the 17th to the 19th century are displayed, most of them donated by Savoy sovereigns and noble families; in the fourth, crowns, chalices, monstrances, votive hearts and the jewels worn by the statue of the Madonna during the centenary coronations from 1620 onwards.
The Royal Apartment can be reached from the museum. It comprises an antechamber, a salon and two rooms furnished with period furniture, portraits of the kings of Sardinia and Italy, and a large 19th-century painting of the Madonna of Oropa with her historic jewels.
