About the museum
The Forte Sabaudo, also known as Su Forti or Sa guardia de Su Pisu, dominates the town of Sant'Antioco from a hill about 50–60 metres high. The military structure, of about 270 m², was built between February 1813 and summer 1815 to a design by the Sardinian artillery officer Ambrogio Capson, drawn up in 1812. Punic walls and a nuraghe, partly demolished, previously stood on the site.
The island was then threatened by raids from Barbary corsairs. In October 1815 a fleet sailing from Tunis attacked Sant'Antioco: Sub-lieutenant Efisio Melis Alagna, the artillerymen and militiamen resisted from inside the fort, but the fortification was overrun and many inhabitants were taken away as prisoners.
The fort was restored in the second half of the 1990s and is now part of the route of the archaeological areas and museums of Sant'Antioco managed by the cooperative Archeotur. From the top there is a view of the Gulf of Palmas.
