About the museum

The Villaggio Ipogeo lies within a sector of the Punic necropolis of Sulky, the ancient Phoenician-Punic name of Sant’Antioco, one of the largest and most complex in Sardinia. The chamber tombs were cut into the rock between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC.

After centuries of abandonment caused by pirate raids, the island was repopulated from the second half of the 18th century. Many families did not receive the land they had been promised and took shelter in the ancient tombs, converted into dwellings: the quarter came to be called “is gruttas” (the caves). In the 1930s about seven hundred people lived there, and the quarter was finally abandoned in the 1970s.

Today the route shows the rooms with furnishings, crockery and everyday objects, and recalls traditional crafts, such as weaving dwarf palm leaves into brooms, bags and cordage. The village is part of the Parco Storico Archeologico di Sant’Antioco.
