About the museum
The Collegio Alberoni was founded in Piacenza in 1751 by Cardinal Giulio Alberoni to train priests of the diocese who could not afford to study, and it was entrusted to the Vincentian Fathers. The cardinal endowed it with cultural, scientific and artistic works, including scientific instruments, archaeological finds and a rich library, which made it a destination for visitors for artistic reasons as well. The Collegio is still today the major seminary of the diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio.
The Galleria Alberoni, open to the public, offers a route through six display sections with works and liturgical furnishings dating from the 16th to the 18th century, the tapestry collection left by the cardinal, and the picture gallery above, which holds paintings of great value.
The guided visit to the Collegio and the Galleria also includes the monumental library and the Cardinal’s Apartment, with Antonello da Messina’s Ecce Homo (1473) and the Cristo di spalle (Christ seen from behind) by the contemporary artist Omar Galliani. Since the Collegio is inhabited by a community, the route through the main sections takes place with an escort.
