About the museum
Bonda is a small hamlet on the wooded hills of the Mortigliengo, in the Biellese area. Here the houses, narrow streets and short stone staircases have been turned into an open-air gallery of modern art called Bondarte.
The idea came from the painter Celso Tempia, born in Bonda in 1907: in 1954 he painted the “Madonna del Sassoferrato” on his father's house, and in 1967 he frescoed a copy of the “Madonna del De Bosis”, the Renaissance painting kept in the nearby Oratorio di San Rocco, to preserve its memory. From 1986 onwards, driven by Gastone Cecconello, frescoes, paintings, sculptures and bas-reliefs multiplied, created together with other artists.
Today the Associazione Culturale Amici della Bonda looks after and promotes the heritage, invites new painters and sculptors to enrich it every year, and organises exhibitions and competitions for young artists. The official website lists around a hundred artists; in summer the little square hosts concerts, shows and film screenings.
