About the museum
The Galleria Henry is the main work of the Pranu Sartu mine at Buggerru, on the south-west coast of Sardinia. It was dug in the last thirty years of the 19th century and takes its name from a French director of the company holding the mining concession. Mining in the area had begun in 1865, when the concessions passed to the Malfidano company.
The tunnel, about one kilometre long, crosses a plateau about 50 metres above sea level. Around 1892 it was enlarged to allow a steam locomotive through, which carried the ore from the underground workings to the washing plants and the port, replacing slow and costly transport by mule.
Today the gallery is made safe and can be visited by booking. The route winds through a labyrinth of passages cut into the rock, with large openings overlooking the sea: on the outward journey an electric mini-train is used along the line of the old steam railway, and on the return you walk through the old pedestrian tunnel used by the mules. Buggerru is one of the eight sites of the Parco Geominerario Storico e Ambientale della Sardegna, recognised by UNESCO, and is also remembered for the mining massacre of 1904.
