About the museum

The Galleria nazionale della Puglia, named after Girolamo and Rosaria Devanna, is housed in Bitonto in the Palazzo Sylos Calò, the finest expression of the city's Renaissance civic architecture. The building, of medieval origin, was extensively restored by Giovanni Alfonso Sylos, a member of a Spanish family from Burgos that had come to Apulia in 1503. The works were completed in 1584 with the raising of the elegant loggia overlooking the main square of the old town; the loggia was dismantled in 1929 because of subsidence of its corner pillar and was only re-erected in 1983.

The collection grew out of the passion of the Devanna brothers, who built it through research on the antiques market, exchanges with other collectors and private purchases. The guiding thread is a taste for discovering the unfamiliar and a curiosity about different forms of artistic culture. Today the gallery is a state museum run by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Puglia.

The display is arranged in five sections, from the 16th to the 20th century, with 354 works including paintings, drawings and sketches. It represents artists of Italian and foreign art of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, minor schools and 19th-century masters from Italy, France, Germany and England. In July 2021 a new room dedicated to the 20th-century collections was opened on the top floor, with works by Giacomo Balla, Adolfo De Carolis, Plinio Nomellini and a female nude by the young Man Ray from 1912.
