About the museum
The museum is housed in the former Jesuit college, whose construction began in 1610 and which today houses the Molfetta diocesan seminary. The roots of the collections go back to the 1830s, when Bishop Filippo Giudice Caracciolo assigned some rooms to a first archaeological collection, with materials from the Pulo di Molfetta belonging to the scholar G. M. Giovene.
The collections were reorganised in the 20th century, and the diocesan museum and picture gallery was opened to the public in 1980. After a reorganisation wanted by Bishop Luigi Martella, the museum reopened on 18 June 2009; since January 2010 management has been entrusted to a cooperative of young people.
The route is divided into sections devoted to the lapidarium, archaeology, vestments, statuary, painting, contemporary art and the treasury. The museum also offers educational activities for schools and a library.
