About the museum
The museum was founded in 2000 on the initiative of Teresa De Palo Ungaro, who in the 1990s set up the foundation of the same name to give Bitonto a space in which to display finds from the Peucetian civilisation excavated in the municipal area. It is housed in a late 19th-century palazzo: on the ground floor are the archaeological museum, the pre-unification archive and the Fondo-Archivio Francesco Speranza; on the first floor are the post-unification archive and the Pinacoteca Ninive, opened in 2005, with works by the artist from Bitonto Nicola Tullo and a collection of etchings and prints by masters of the 20th century.
The route, across three rooms, reconstructs the social and cultural life of the Peucetian community through grave goods dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC, largely from the Via Traiana necropolis. It includes two permanent exhibitions: “Gli antichi Peucezi a Bitonto” and “Donne e Guerrieri da Ruvo e Bitonto”.
The first room holds the oldest archaic burial and the tomb of an athlete, with a bell krater showing a winged Nike crowning the athlete. The second room houses the rich grave goods of the only semi-chamber tomb identified in Bitonto, with around fifty ceramic and metal finds, including a red-figure symposium set. Educational workshops for schools are under way, and projects are in progress to make the museum accessible to visitors with visual and hearing impairments.
