About the museum
The Galleria provinciale d’arte moderna e contemporanea di Foggia was established in September 1980 in two small rooms on the ground floor of the Palazzo Dogana, seat of the Provincial Administration. After years of intermittent activity, from the mid-1990s the gallery was relaunched as part of the comprehensive restoration of the palace and the development of the provincial museum system.
Today it occupies about half of the ground floor of the Palazzo Dogana, adapted to the needs of a modern museum. The route comprises two permanent displays: the first is dedicated to artists of Capitanata active from the second half of the 19th century to the 1970s and 1980s of the 20th century, the second presents works on deposit from the collection of the Istituto San Paolo-Banco di Napoli.
The Province of Foggia now lists the gallery as part of the Polo biblio-museale of the Puglia Region; in 2016 the site was also registered in the FAI census of Luoghi del Cuore (Places of the Heart).
