About the museum
The museum opened in 1996 and holds natural history specimens mainly from the local area; it carries out research and public outreach on the flora, fauna and ecosystems of the Capitanata. It is part of the Polo Biblio-Museale of Foggia, established by the Puglia Region, and is in Viale Giuseppe Di Vittorio.
The sections are organised in two large areas. The “Evoluzione” (Evolution) area includes the Darwin Room, the Pedone Collection, the Sea Rooms and the Martucci malacological collection. The “Ambienti di Capitanata” (Habitats of the Capitanata) area presents the wetlands and the steppe, hill and mountain environments of the territory.
The visit routes are enriched by numerous dioramas and tactile routes. In March 2019, after restoration and air-conditioning work, the museum reopened to the public with guided tours for schools and the “Serate Natura” (Nature Evenings) series of talks.
