About the museum

The Museo Diocesano di Lucera occupies the main wing of the 18th-century Bishop's Palace, opposite the 14th-century cathedral basilica, and extends over about 500 square metres. It is the sacred art museum of the Diocese of Lucera-Troia. It is run by volunteers of the cultural association “Terzo Millennio”, who also offer facilitated approaches to reading the works.

The collection includes furnishings, historical documents and the historic bishop's picture gallery, whose first portraits date from Monsignor Alfonso Maria Freda (1798–1816), as well as relics and most of the treasure of the Archivio Capitolare (chapter archive): a 13th-century pyx in red jasper, a 14th-century diptych in gilded silver plates attributed to Sulmona goldsmiths, the cloak of Saint Francesco Antonio Fasani and the vestments of the Blessed Agostino Kazotic.

Among the sculptures are the Madonna del Melograno (Madonna of the Pomegranate) in polychrome stone and a triptych with the Madonna delle Stelle, both 14th-century. The bookshop has publications and guides on the city and the diocese.
