About the museum
The Museo Civico “Giuseppe Fiorelli” in Lucera, named after the archaeologist from Lucera who organised the first systematic excavations at Pompeii, was founded in 1905 on the initiative of private individuals, with a first seat in two rooms of the Palazzo Municipale, where a small collection of antiquities had existed since the 19th century. Donations from Lucera families such as the Prignano, Cavalli and De Troia formed the core of the collections.
Between 1934 and 1936 the museum moved to its present seat, the Palazzo de Nicastri-Cavalli in via de Nicastri, an 18th-century noble palazzo partly donated to the Comune under the will of Eduardo Cavalli. Closed after the earthquake of 31 October 2002, it was renovated and re-set up over ten years: a first part, on classical archaeology, opened in 2009, and the full reopening, including the medieval archaeology section, took place in 2012.
The route unfolds over two levels, in about twenty rooms: one room of prehistoric, protohistoric and pre-Roman finds, five Roman-period rooms, three Early Christian rooms and three medieval rooms, as well as 18th- and 19th-century rooms with period furnishings, such as the Cavalli salon, the kitchen and the chapel.
