About the museum
The Roman amphitheatre of Terni, the ancient Interamna Nahars, dates from the 1st century AD and stood on the edge of the ancient town, near the gate on the Via Flaminia. The building, which hosted gladiatorial contests and hunts, has an elliptical plan with axes of about 97.5 and 73 metres. Its outer walls retain a two-coloured opus reticulatum facing.
The name “Fausto” (Fausto) is considered inappropriate: it derives from an augustal sevir mentioned in an inscription. A plaque with a dedication, attributed to around AD 32, to the providence of the emperor Tiberius is kept in the archaeological museum, while a copy is set into the western side.
In the Middle Ages the building was used as a quarry for building materials and belonged to the diocese. Houses and religious buildings were built against its walls, most of which were demolished in the 1930s. Today the cavea is partly rebuilt. The monument, run by the CAOS museum network, hosts summer shows and open-air screenings, as well as visits by reservation.
