About the museum
The Grotta della Vipera is a Roman funerary monument dating from the late 1st and early 2nd century AD, along the Viale Sant'Avendrace near the Tuvixeddu necropolis. It was built by Lucius Cassius Philippus for his wife, the noblewoman Attilia Pomptilla.
According to the inscriptions, Philippus, exiled to Sardinia, had fallen ill with malaria; his wife prayed to the gods to take her life in place of her husband's. The man recovered, while she died shortly afterwards.
The tomb is shaped like a temple and has a forecourt with two burial chambers, where both inhumation and cremation coexist. Two snakes are depicted on the pediment, which gives the monument its name. The columbarium of Tito Vinio Berillo can also be visited at the same street number.
