Grotta di San Michele

Karst cave on the outskirts of Ozieri, eponymous site of the Ozieri (San Michele) Neolithic culture, open to visitors with a guide.

Opening hoursAdmission €3

About the museum

The cave opens on the edge of the town of Ozieri, in a limestone massif carved in the past by a watercourse that has since disappeared. It extends about 160 metres, of which about sixty are accessible, and descends about 80 metres underground, with chambers and galleries decorated with stalactites and calcite alabaster crusts. The name recalls a church dedicated to the Archangel Michael that once stood nearby.

It is a fundamental site for Sardinian archaeology: it gives its name to the Ozieri or San Michele culture, placed in the final Neolithic between 3200 and 2800 BC. The finds, in particular ceramics with incised concentric semicircle decoration and tools in flint and obsidian, show a very high technical level. The cave was inhabited and also used as a place of worship and burial.

Part of the cavity was damaged by the construction of domus de janas tombs. Finds from the first excavations of the 20th century are partly preserved in the Civico Museo Archeologico di Ozieri. The cave is managed by the Istituzione San Michele of the Comune di Ozieri.
