About the museum
The museum was officially founded on 29 June 1985 in the former 16th-century convent of San Francesco, already in use as a multi-purpose cultural centre, and was moved in 2003 to the former Convent of the Clarisse, restored with regional funding. The new building provided larger spaces to display the materials accumulated over the years.
The Convent of the Clarisse was inaugurated in 1753 and in the 19th century became a destination for pilgrimage. Requisitioned after the laws suppressing religious orders, it was later used as a barracks until 1953. The complex today houses the museum and cultural activities.
The collections document the archaeology of the Ozieri area: finds from the caves, including the Grotta di San Michele, the Saturno and Amadu collection, bronzes for everyday and votive use from the Nuragic age, such as the Cattina collection and the Delogu-Tola ingot, and the numismatic section with part of the coin hoards of Lagostis, Baesia and Tramentu. On the upper floor, the Bandini rooms house an ethnographic section with portraits, photographs and period objects.
