About the museum
Grumentum was a Lucanian city allied with Rome, passed through by Hannibal during the Second Punic War and refounded as a Roman colony around the middle of the 1st century BC. The site is a rare example in Basilicata of a Roman urban layout that is still clearly legible, and it lies within the Parco nazionale dell'Appennino Lucano.
The visit route includes the Roman theatre and the house with mosaics, the forum with the Capitolium, the Augusteo, the basilica, the curia and the forum baths, as well as the Terme Maggiori. Next to the forum stands the basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the city's first cathedral. The amphitheatre, one of the oldest known stone amphitheatres, overlooks Lake Pertusillo.
The finds from the excavations are displayed in the nearby Museo archeologico nazionale dell'Alta Val d'Agri, about 300 m south of the park entrance, where the ticket office is also located; a combined ticket covers both sites.
