About the museum
The Museo archeologico nazionale dell’Alta Val d’Agri is located in Grumento Nova, in the area of the Pietra del Pertusillo lake, next to the archaeological park of the ancient Grumentum. It was established only recently, towards the end of the 20th century, to collect the finds of the Agri valley. Since December 2014 it has been run by the Ministry of Culture through the Polo museale della Basilicata, which became the Direzione regionale Musei in December 2019.
The building spreads over two levels. On the ground floor the pre-Roman period is displayed: fossils of elephants and equids, finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages, Greek and red-figure pottery, Oenotrian armlets and votive figurines. Some Pleistocene remains, such as the tusk and molar of Elephas antiquus found at San Giuliano, previously belonged to a private and then a municipal collection.
In the basement is the Roman section, divided into six display groups: stones and portraits, finds from the four temples, mosaics and pottery, funerary objects, inscriptions and coins, with late antique and early medieval grave goods. Educational panels reconstruct the city’s monuments.
