About the museum
Janua – Museo delle streghe is located in Benevento, in Palazzo Paolo V, on Corso Garibaldi. The museum grew out of research on rites of passage and offers an educational route devoted to the world of the janare, the witches of local tradition, and to the history, art, customs and legends of Benevento and the Sannio.
The collection includes very different objects: holy prints, ex-votos, anthropomorphic breads and medicinal herbs. The museum presents women as guardians of local tradition, at times as healers and at times as witches. The guided visit includes a video installation created by artists from the area.
The section “Janua – Magistra Historiae” hosts workshops, a library and works linked to the rites and monuments of Benevento. The museum’s symbol is a two-tailed mermaid (sirena bicaudata), which recalls the cult of the Mother Goddess and the Dionysian fertility rites that survived in the countryside.
