About the museum
The ARCOS museum, housed in the Palazzo del Governo on Corso Garibaldi in Benevento, opened on 25 June 2005 with the aim of promoting artistic culture in the Sannio area. It is part of the provincial museum network of Benevento (Rete museale della Provincia di Benevento). Its direction was entrusted to the critic Danilo Eccher until 2010 and, from 2013, to Ferdinando Creta.
The contemporary art section has no collection of its own, but presents temporary exhibitions of Italian and international artists; in recent years attention has focused on artists active in Campania from the 1950s onwards.
The museum also houses the Egyptian Section of the Museo del Sannio, with finds from the temple of the goddess Isis in Benevento. The temple was built by the emperor Domitian between AD 88 and 89 with materials brought from Egypt, and for this reason Benevento preserves the greatest concentration of original Egyptian artefacts in the West, mostly statues. The route reconstructs an imaginary journey through the sanctuary, from initiation into the cult to the goddess's cella.
