About the museum
The Museo di Padre Pio is attached to the convent of the Friars Minor Capuchin in Pietrelcina, the village where Francesco Forgione was born on 25 May 1887 and where, on 22 January 1903, he put on the habit and took the name Fra Pio da Pietrelcina. The museum, run by the community of friars, tells the life of the saint, both happy and difficult, and his devotion to God.
The visit brings visitors close to objects linked to his childhood and everyday life: the cradle in which he was wrapped as a newborn, the teacher’s desk with school exercise books, clothing, footwear, mittens and the habit. The friar’s own objects, few and rare, include chalices, hand towels, purificators, sacred vestments, stoles and albs; the most important is the flagellation tunic, linked to the mystical phenomena that occurred in Pietrelcina.
The museum’s collection also includes paintings by the artist Francesco Gentile, depicting the setting and landscape in which Padre Pio’s story unfolded. Admission is free.
