About the museum
The nativity scene museum occupies the Romanesque tower of the former Gries castle, now part of the Muri-Gries monastery in Bolzano. The first exhibition room opened in 1991; today the nativity scenes are spread over four floors, arranged by style and period of creation.
The collection spans three centuries, with pieces dating from the mid-18th century: Nativity scenes, Passion (Easter) scenes, and antique, Oriental and modern examples. It includes around 40 folk art figures and the Lofferer nativity scene, acquired from the Lofferer farmstead in Gries.
It is one of the three nativity scene collections in South Tyrol.
