About the museum
The museum occupies an arcaded house on Via Argentieri (Silbergasse), formed from the union of three buildings: a merchant's house, a warehouse and a residence. The Romanesque core dates from the 13th century, and later Gothic and Renaissance additions shaped its present appearance; the Eccel merchant family ran a furniture shop and an art gallery there.
The collection began in the 1950s, when the entrepreneur and patron Friedrich Eccel and his wife Hilde Eccel Tapfer started buying contemporary art and hosting artists at their villa. Their daughter Eva Eccel, an art historian and critic, expanded it together with her husband, the judge Josef Kreuzer, who took over the house and most of the works at the end of the 1990s and continued to enrich them until his death in 2017.
Shortly before his death, Josef Kreuzer donated the house and collection to the Provincia di Bolzano, wishing for a museum to be set up there. The collection comprises around 1,500 works from 1900 onwards by more than 300 artists, with a core of works by Hans Ebensperger, Karl Plattner and Peter Fellin, and documents modern painting from Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino. The museum is currently closed for renovation and will reopen in 2027 with a new permanent display.
