About the museum
The Filzerhof is a Mòcheno farmstead at about 1,250 metres above sea level in Fierozzo (Vlarotz), along the provincial road of the Valle del Fèrsina. In the Mòcheno language the farmstead is called der hoff: it is more than a house. It is the place where work, social relations, the handing down of knowledge, including linguistic knowledge, and the rituals of the community come together.
The founding document dates from 1324, when the lord of the castle of Pergine entrusted a tenant farmer with a plot to be cultivated and on which to build his home. In 1338 the farmstead was assigned to Freidank, from whom it took the name Freidankhoff, and it then passed to the Marchel and Laner families, the latter known as Filzer. It was the latter who, partly thanks to the proceeds of itinerant trade within the Empire in the second half of the 18th century, gave the main building its present appearance and enlarged the property, which came to exceed twenty hectares. From the 19th century the farmstead was increasingly referred to as Filzerhof. The property passed almost unchanged until 1967, when the last heirs died without direct descendants.
In 1992 the farmstead was bought by the Kulturinstitut Bersntol Lusern, today the Istituto culturale mòcheno, and restored using traditional techniques and skills, including the reconstruction of the roof with schintln, small hand-worked larch shingles. Opened to the public in 1998, the museum shows the traditional way of life, with rooms furnished partly with original objects from the farmstead and partly with pieces from other houses; among the spaces is the Sprochkòmmer, dedicated to the Mòcheno language.
