About the museum
The Museo d'Arte di Avellino (MdAO) was created by transforming a private gallery into a museum open to the public, and it was inaugurated on 2 January 1995. In January 2006 it closed to reorganise the collection, and it reopened in May 2012 with a new display.
The collection includes sculptures, drawings, pastels, oil paintings and art multiples such as prints, bronzes, silverware, lithographs and screen prints. Most of the works are on loan from private collectors, and some belong to the museum. The display is divided into three sections: the 19th century, the 20th century and contemporary art, with works by artists such as Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico and Renato Guttuso.
The museum also has a library of art history devoted to the 19th and 20th centuries and a video library with documentaries on Italian art from the 13th century onwards.
