About the museum
The Museo zoologico of Avellino is dedicated to invertebrates and bears the name of Lauretana Carbone. According to the listings on the Musei Italiani and ISPRA portals, the collection is considered one of the most complete of its kind in Italy and is arranged in three sections presenting the main classes of invertebrates.
The first section houses sponges and cnidarians, the second arthropods, tentaculates, annelids, molluscs and echinoderms. Among the most important collections are the demosponges, hyalosponges and calcareous sponges, hydrocorals, stony corals and gorgonians, horseshoe crabs and crustaceans, and starfish and sea urchins.
Among the curiosities are the collection of tentaculates, the only one in Campania; the living merostomes, with all the species of horseshoe crabs; the collection of the largest insects in the world; and the butterfly collection with species from every continent. The collection of Mediterranean and tropical echinoderms is also very complete.
