About the museum
The castle of Summonte is first documented in 1094, and the village remained a military garrison into the modern age. Originally there was a fortlet, the Castrum Submontis, guarding the ancient Abellinum; the Lombards enlarged it with a round-based tower, and in the Angevin period the tower was remodelled.
The surviving element is the cylindrical tower with a truncated-cone base, dating from the late 13th to the early 14th century, built on the ruins of the castle, probably inhabited by the Malerba family in the Norman period. It is built of limestone blocks and lime mortar, with an elliptical plan at the base, perhaps to enclose an earlier keep.
In the mid-1990s an archaeological excavation under the direction of the Soprintendenza brought to light structures of the Norman-Swabian castle. The tower has recently been restored, with the reconstruction of the timber floors and of the original masonry.
