About the museum

The Museo Irpino is the main cultural institution of the Province of Avellino. After the major excavation campaigns of the 1950s at Mirabella Eclano, in the Valle d’Ansanto and at Ariano Irpino, an archaeological exhibition in 1954 prepared the reopening of the museum, which from 1957 was temporarily housed in the Prefecture building.

The historic seat, the Palazzo della Cultura designed by Francesco Fariello, was inaugurated on 19 December 1966, with the display entrusted to Mario Napoli. In 1970 the modern art and Risorgimento sections were established. The picture gallery, which includes paintings by Achille Martelli bequeathed in 1903 and other works of the 19th and 20th centuries, has been open to the public since 2004 in the Complesso Monumentale del Carcere Borbonico.

Today the collections are displayed in the two sites, with sections devoted to archaeology, nativity scenes, the Risorgimento, the picture gallery, science, the lapidary collection and a route on “Irpinia, memoria ed evoluzione” (Irpinia, memory and evolution), which also covers the ancient prison structures.
