The South Tyrolean artist Hubert Kostner creates a multi-level installation in the museum using used climbing ropes donated by mountaineers and visitors. The project is completed by a film with interviews and an interactive area with ropes and knots.
About the museum
The Messner Mountain Museum Corones stands on the Plan de Corones (Kronplatz) at 2,275 metres above sea level and is the highest venue in the series of museums founded by Reinhold Messner. The museum is devoted to traditional mountaineering: its history, its equipment and its evolution.
The building, by the architect Zaha Hadid, seems to slip into the rock and directs the gaze towards the mountains through spatial axes and large windows. Concrete, clean lines and silence accompany a route with tools, works of art, words and relics linked to the history of mountaineering.
The museum offers a reflection on the relationship between humans and mountains rather than on celebrity: Messner, who founded and curates it, speaks of a long confrontation of about 250 years between the mountain and the human being. The panorama of the Dolomites is part of the story.
