Wil-ma Kammerer and Andreas Zingerle reflect on what remains when objects, bodies and landscapes change: she with works on the fragility of nature, he with objects in concrete set against painting.
The museum was opened in 1995 by the Museumsverein Bruneck association under the name Stadtmuseum Bruneck. It is housed in the former post-house stables in the centre of Brunico and was originally devoted mainly to modern and contemporary art. In 2023 it adopted its current name, ECK Museum of Art.
The core of the collection comes from the bequest of the local chronicler Johann Nepomuk Tinkhauser. Over time it has been joined by loans and donations, especially of late Gothic sacred art: the permanent collection room features a keystone with an angel bust by Michael Pacher (c. 1459), a panel by Friedrich Pacher, works by Simon von Taisten and the Maestro di Villa Ottone, and as its centrepiece the Pala di Sonnenburg (Sonnenburg altarpiece, 1490) by Simon and Veit von Taisten.
The collections also include prints, drawings and watercolours by local, national and international artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, a photographic holding (including Ernst Mariner and the Kofler family of photographers) and more than 12,000 ex libris (bookplates) from all over the world. Artists represented include Emil Nolde, Werner Berg, Fortunato Depero, Paul Flora, Karl Plattner and Peter Fellin. The museum organises temporary exhibitions and has an art-printing workshop, the KunstGarage and the Raiffeisen Galerie.
