About the museum
The Casa della Civiltà Contadina di Gaville is housed in the rooms of the rectory, the stable and the oil press, which are attached to the Romanesque parish church of San Romolo a Gaville, in the municipality of Figline e Incisa Valdarno. The church dates back to the 11th century.
The museum displays objects that illustrate the life, work and culture of a rural society that has now disappeared, spanning the period from the 18th century to the 1960s. The objects come mainly from the Valdarno, but some come from other regions and are shown for comparison. Each room is devoted to a particular kind of work and documents the main themes of rural life in the Valdarno, linked above all to olive oil production.
Among the most remarkable pieces are the original, intact 18th-century oil press, the old tinaie (vat rooms) and a herbarium of local medicinal plants.
