About the museum
The Modern Automata Museum was founded in 2001, but the idea dates back to the 1980s, after several visits to the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre in London, which at its Covent Garden venue exhibited works by Paul Spooner, Peter Markey, Keith Newstead and other artists. The museum is run by the Associazione culturale Modern Automata Museum.
The museum is located at Montopoli di Sabina, about 40 kilometres north of Rome, in part of the Castelletto di Vezzano, a fortified tower of early medieval origin built by the monks of the Farfa abbey. The displays were set up between June and October 2001 by a group of members.
Since 2001 the museum has hosted automata by numerous artists from various countries, including Keith Newstead, Neil Hardy, Peter Markey, Paul Spooner, Rob Ives and Marina Gigli. Since 2005 the association has organised automaton-building workshops for children, teachers and artists and has put on travelling exhibitions, such as “Il segreto del movimento”, with 45 mechanical sculptures.
