About the museum
The collection originated in the late Renaissance, when ancient inscriptions were gathered under the porticoes of the Palazzo Comunale. Works of art from property confiscated from ecclesiastical bodies were later added. They were first exhibited in 1865 in the former convent of Sant’Agostino and moved in 1911 to the second floor of the Palazzo Comunale, where they formed the Quadreria civica (civic picture gallery).
The historical-artistic section, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, presents works from the 14th to the 19th century, with paintings by Zanino di Pietro, Luca di Tommé and Antoniazzo Romano. The archaeological section is housed in the former monastery of Santa Lucia, in Via Sant’Anna, and holds finds from the 12th century BC to the 13th century AD, including material from excavations by the Soprintendenza (heritage authority).
The museum offers visits with educational support included in the ticket, and an educational programme for schools and families.
