Exhibition on the history of road freight transport, from the first vehicles to modern supertrucks, with around 600 model vehicles and dioramas at 1:87 scale, half of them unique handmade pieces.
About the museum
The idea for the museum arose in 2004, when a German guest on holiday in South Tyrol suggested making his collection of miniature trains public. In 2005 the association Freunde der Modelleisenbahn was founded on the initiative of Georg Laimer, owner of the Hanswirt hotel in Rablà; the collector transferred most of his models to the association.
The venue is the historic hayloft (Stadel) of the Hanswirt, converted from October 2008 with its façade kept in the original form to respect the historic ensemble. The large model reproducing the South Tyrolean railways at scale, from Terme di Brennero to Malles, was commissioned in July 2008, and the museum opened in summer 2009.
The exhibition covers about 1,000 m² with 800 m of track, 70 trains, 400 vehicles and 12,000 figures; the collection includes over 20,000 model trains. Lighting and day and night scenes alternate at regular intervals. After the difficult years of the pandemic, visitor numbers returned to previous levels in 2022.
