About the museum
The Prokulus Museum opened in 2006 beside the small church of San Procolo in Naturno, one of the oldest early Christian churches in South Tyrol, built between 630 and 650 AD on the site of a Roman house. The church preserves pre-Romanesque frescoes dated between the 7th and 10th centuries, among the oldest in the German-speaking world; the entrance ticket is valid for both the church and the museum.
The museum, largely underground, tells about 1,500 years of local history in four thematic rooms: late antiquity, the early Middle Ages, the Gothic age and an epidemic of the 17th century. Short films and archaeological finds from Naturno illustrate each period. The Gothic frescoes of the 14th century, which in the church covered the older ones and have been detached, are on display. An anthropological section is devoted to the study of bones, and the burials from a 17th-century epidemic show how severely the disease struck the population and entire districts of the village.
Nearby, a Roman settlement and mass graves have been found. The church is a stop on the circular Ritterweg (Knights’ Path) route in Naturno.
