About the museum
The museum is housed in the former Chiesa Madre of Santa Margherita di Belice, badly damaged by the earthquake of 15 January 1968 and later rebuilt. It belongs to the Rete museale e naturale belicina and is run by the municipality.
The exhibitions tell the story of the valley's towns before and after the disaster: Gibellina, Montevago, Salaparuta, Poggioreale, Santa Margherita di Belice, Santa Ninfa, Sambuca di Sicilia and Vita. Photographs from archives and private collections, literary quotations and paintings address the themes of loss, emergency, solidarity and the drive to rebuild. The material also includes audiovisual recordings, collections of newspapers and magazines of the period and photo albums, while a multimedia room shows videos on the history of the valley from 1968 to today.
