About the museum
The museum is in Palazzo Filangeri Cutò, in the centre of Santa Margherita di Belice. The writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa spent many summers there between the ages of six and twenty, and memories of the palace and its garden inspired the pages set in the palace of Donnafugata. The building, constructed in the 17th century and renovated in 1810, was largely destroyed by the Belice earthquake of 1968 and later partly rebuilt; today it also houses the town hall and the Teatro Sant’Alessandro.
The itinerary is built entirely around the novel “Il Gattopardo”. The display cases show the manuscript with the author’s corrections, letters, notes, documents and period photographs, while multimedia stations present critical essays and films based on the book. A previously unpublished sound document accompanies the visit: a recording of the writer’s voice reading the story “Lighea”, made almost as a game in 1956 by Gioacchino Lanza Tomasi on a new tape recorder. The museum also includes a small space with wax figures devoted to a scene from Visconti’s film.
