About the museum

The MUDIA is the Sambuca di Sicilia exhibition hub of the dispersed museum of the Diocese of Agrigento, of which the Diocesan Museum is the lead site. It was created by the Archdiocese and the church community in collaboration with the Municipality of Sambuca and the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) of Agrigento, in the premises of the Church of the Purgatory, built in 1631.

The route brings together the historical, artistic and liturgical heritage of the main town churches damaged by the 1968 earthquake that devastated the Belice Valley, including the Chiesa Madre, San Calogero, the Collegio, Santa Caterina, the hospital church, San Michele and the Carmine. A separate route is dedicated to the church of San Giorgio, demolished in 1959, of which historical photographs, fragments of the portal, a medieval fresco of the Madonna delle Grazie and liturgical furnishings survive. The display uses architectural set pieces that integrate the display cases and allow visitors to sense the church’s original spaces.

The thematic rooms include the Sala Feliciana, dedicated to the Capuchin friar and painter Fra Felice da Sambuca, an area with works by Santa Caterina, the Sala Planeta, linked to Monsignor Diego Planeta, last judge of the Apostolic Legation, with his vestments and a historical reconstruction of the papal legate’s office, the Sala dei Paramenti e delle Suppellettili liturgiche (vestments and liturgical furnishings) and the Sala San Giorgio. The museum is part of the Parco Culturale Ecclesiale di Agrigento.
